Roadmap

Where Battle Arena Masters is heading

What we have finished in the Unity game, what we are working on now and what we would like to do next. No release dates: plans change as we test and learn. The earlier HTML5 prototype has its own section at the bottom.

Road to release

  1. Done3/3

    The idea

We started from nothing with one question: can a MOBA be simple enough for a phone and still have depth?

    • Done: The core idea: 3v3, portrait mode, one special per hero
    • Done: Playable HTML5 prototype with heroes, bots and a tower to destroy
    • Done: Auto-attacks hit a random enemy in range, so anyone can pick it up
  2. Done5/5

    The move to Unity

The prototype became a real mobile game, rule by rule.

    • Done: Full port of rules, menus, HUD and 3D view to Unity
    • Done: Runs on Android phones
    • Done: Same rules for everyone, so a match can be replayed exactly
    • Done: Bots that play as a team (three skill levels)
    • Done: Co-op and 1v1 over the internet in early form (one phone hosts)
  3. Done5/5

    Ten heroes of our own

A fresh roster, built to be easy to tell apart.

    • Done: Ten heroes with their own roles and specials
    • Done: Tap a special for auto-aim, drag it to aim yourself
    • Done: Team combos: matching specials give a damage bonus
    • Done: Own 3D models, portraits, ability icons and hit effects
    • Done: Tutorial guided by Fenn
  4. Right now5/9

Easy to learn, fun to watch

Making the game readable for a brand-new player, and fair to play against.

    • Done: New HUD, plus a simple HUD for new players
    • Done: Focus: the targeting system is named and shown on screen
    • Done: Bots that play as a team with you
    • Done: Our own minions: Knobb, Zipp and Bunk
    • Done: First original arena is playable, and shots stop at walls
    • To do: Tutorial that teaches Focus, bushes and walls
    • To do: Bots that use team combos
    • To do: Final map art in our own style
    • To do: Balance pass on all ten heroes
  5. Being built0/5 · 5 in progress

    Know our players

You cannot improve a game you cannot see. We are adding the services that tell us how people play and bring them back.

    • In progress: Analytics: do new players stay?
    • In progress: Leaderboards and cloud save
    • In progress: Friends, party voice chat and notifications
    • In progress: Matchmaker: one queue for everyone
    • In progress: Economy: currencies and rewards (no pay-to-win)
  6. Next1/5

    Reach thousands of players

A 3v3 game needs a full lobby. Our first goal is thousands of players, before any income.

    • Done: Web version looked into: possible, with changes
    • To do: A queue for strangers, with bots clearly marked
    • To do: Testers outside the team, on real phones
    • To do: Smaller app size and smooth play on mid-range phones
    • To do: Unique sounds per hero
  7. Before release0/5

    Launch

The paperwork and polish that turn a project into a product.

    • To do: Online server for ranked play and profiles
    • To do: Google Play listing, package name and store graphics
    • To do: Rights checked for every model, sound and image
    • To do: Privacy policy and age rating
    • To do: Closed beta, then public release
  8. Ideas0/4

    After release (not promised)

Things we like but have not started.

    • To do: iOS version
    • To do: Spectate a friend's match
    • To do: Cosmetics and shop
    • To do: More maps and a mid-map objective

Current focus

What we are working on now

  1. In progress

Making every hero clearer in combat

We are refining hero roles, signature abilities and combat readability. Hero designs and balance remain in development and may change as we test.

  2. In progress

    Improving automated gameplay tests

We are strengthening automated tests so they follow the game’s real settings and rules. Automated tests help us find problems, but they do not replace Unity builds and phone testing.

Planned

Things we want to build. Order and scope may change, and nothing here is a promise.

Planned Unity work will appear here once Simon and Rickard have reviewed it.

Completed

Finished Unity work is shown here once it has been checked.

Nothing confirmed as finished yet.
